How to make your own great-tasting homemade cinnamon rolls, using fail-proof methods for perfect results.

Cinnamon buns or cinnamon rolls are so tempting to the taste buds. What could be better than tender bun spirals coated with rich cinnamon syrup? Best of all, cinnamon rolls are not difficult to make. Read on for tips for making great-tasting sticky buns.

Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

Step 1:

In a measuring cup combine:

  • 1/2 cup of warm water
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. yeast

Stir. Let sit until foamy, 5-10 minutes.

Step 2:

Into a large bowl stir together:

  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Add:
  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 1 1/2 cups milk

Step 3:

  • Add in yeast mixture and stir.

Step 4:

  • Add in 10 cups of flour

Add flour by the cupfuls and stir with a wooden spoon until mixture becomes stiff. Dust dough with more flour and work with your hands, kneading and adding flour each time dough becomes sticky. Continue to knead until dough becomes smooth. Start folding dough over into the center, kneading and folding until dough develops an elastic feel. Turn dough over and brush a little oil on top. Cover bowl with a tea towel. Set it in a warm place to rise. When dough has doubled in size, punch down and let dough rise a second time. Punch down again.

Making Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Step 5:

  1. Roll dough out on a floured counter into a large rectangle, to a 1" thickness.
  2. Spread soft margarine or butter over the bun dough, leaving a 1-2" border around the edge.
  3. Sprinkle on light brown sugar until margarine is coated. The amount of brown sugar you use determines the sweetness of your cinnamon rolls.
  4. Sprinkle cinnamon evenly over the brown sugar.
  5. Add a light dusting of ground cloves.

Shaping Cinnamon Rolls

  1. Starting on one long side, roll the dough into a long log.
  2. Dust a sharp knife with flour and cut 1" wide spirals.
  3. Place cinnamon buns into 9" X 12" greased cake pans.
  4. Continue cutting rounds until you reach the end of the log.
  5. Dot tops of sticky buns with more margarine and push any excess brown sugar into the inside of the bun spirals.

Cinnamon Roll Recipe Tips

  • Always use soft margarine or butter for your sticky buns over hard margarine. Using hard margarine may result in hard, sugary areas instead of soft syrup.
  • The amount of margarine you use determines the amount of syrup.
  • Adjust flour amounts, depending on whether you prefer dryer or moister cinnamon buns.

Cooking Instructions for Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Bake rolls in a preheated oven at 325 degrees until lightly browned. Cinnamon buns should bake for 20-30 minutes or longer depending on their size. When buns are done, remove pans from oven and tip cinnamon rolls onto a flat surface. Scrap off any excess syrup onto the top of buns.

Serve sticky buns while still warm or serve them cold spread with butter. Cinnamon Buns can be frozen and defrosted as needed.

Homemade cinnamon rolls make a good, packable picnic item and are a welcome addition at potlucks. Sticky rolls are a favorite treat at Christmas.

Okay recipe - I halved it and still had plenty of cinnamon rolls - about 16. I used whole wheat flour to try and make the recipe slightly healthier, however I think this was a mistake, slightly tough and grainy. They were really not sweet at all. The dough needs sugar, like a full cup in my opinion and probably that much less flour to balance. I made a cream cheese frosting drizzle on top since I did not add extra sugar. I would also advise A TON of brown sugar in the middle, I don't think I added enough, I had a very thin layer. I also used 5 spice instead of nutmeg - nice touch if I do say so myself. Also, FYI, this took close to 2 hours to make, maybe even more (due to the dough needing to rise.) Overall, with lots of adjustments, this is a very workable and easy recipe. Good Luck

Yes, these should be made with white flour. Using white flour ensures feathery light cinnmon buns.

If you use a generous amount of brown sugar for your filling, these cinnamon rolls are plenty sweet. The dough has the addition of sugar so that it has a slightly sweet taste.

Make sure to use soft margarine so that your filling becomes a soft syrup that coats the cinnamon rolls.

I've made my fair share of cinnimon rolls over my 64 years and just reading the recipe tells me that this is a winner, as long as you stay with the recipe. I've decided to make them for our Christmas Potluck Dinner. That should show you how confident I am they will turn out. :)
Thank you for giving out the recipe and Merry Christmas!
